Path of Exile Item Upgrading

Item upgrading allows players to upgrade their weapons and equipment with new affixes, boosting the base stats of the item or providing additional benefits. To upgrade items, players must have the item in their inventory and have access to the kiln.

Typically, items with weak bases (like rings) can be upgraded to a stronger base, while objects with strong bases, such as Eth titans don't change in their stats following being upgraded.

Upgrade components

Upgrade components can be added to armors, weapons, trinkets, and gathering tools. They provide an attribute bonus, or an additional benefit, while the equipment is in use. They can be purchased from vendors, found as loot gathered by enemies or received from missions and chests. Certain upgrades also have cosmetic effects. Most upgrades require that the equipment be at a specific level to upgrade.

To upgrade an armor, weapon or other item in the game, players must select it and click the Upgrade button on the toolbar. This will display on the right-hand side of the screen a preview that shows the expected upgrade stats and the required component or materials.

There are three types of upgrade components: universal upgrades, prefix upgrades, and suffix upgrades. Universal upgrades, which include gems, can be put in any kind of equipment and provide smaller bonuses than upgrade components that are type-restricted. Infusions, which can only be placed in gear that is ascended and legendary equipment are similar to gems, but offer higher bonuses and are not able to be placed in any other equipment. Suffix upgrades are able to be placed in gathering tools, will add their name to the end of the name of the item they are attached to, for example adding a Glyph to an item that is a Staff Wrapping of Minor Vigor would make it a Canthan Staff Wrapping of Minor Vigor.

If a player upgrades a gathering tool and replaces the glyphs with a different one, the old one will be returned to their inventory. If you replace any other upgrade component with a glyph, it will be destroyed, with the exception for the inscriptions, which are able to be swapped.

Leveling

Path of Exile's upgrade system differs from previous versions in several key ways. Gear is now categorized in tracks, and each item can only be upgraded so many times before it's "leveled out." The cost of upgrading is increased with each level however the materials required don't increase as much. This allows players to concentrate their efforts on a few essential items and maximize their impact rather than spreading out the upgrade costs across multiple pieces.

In the past, some upgrade items had priority affixes which made them easier to roll for than others. This has changed since the last patch. Priority affixes were removed and all upgrades have the same chance of rolling each stat. This can be a good or a bad thing, depending on your requirements and requirements from your equipment.

Each upgraded item could have a unique fixed-value bonus that boosts its power by a specific percentage. These bonuses are added to the standard affixes. The more you improve a product, the greater your chance of obtaining the bonus of a different kind.
